Of course, the reasons given for the imminent death of satradio are the same reasons traditional radio needs to push its existing content onto the web and must create unique content for the web that can’t be heard or seen anywhere else.
From FMQB:
Arbitron has released its first-ever report on satellite radio ratings, with detailed figures on listenership for Sirius and XM. Unsurprisingly, Howard Stern’s “Howard 100″ is the most popular channel in satellite radio, with an AQH of 96,700 listeners and a total cume of 1,225,100. However, this is still only a fraction of Stern at his peak on terrestrial radio.
… As for some of the other, big-name personalities, Oprah Winfrey’s “Oprah & Friends” channel draws a weekly cume of just 115,800, while Martha Stewart’s Sirius channel nets only 35,700 listeners per week.
… Overall, Arbitron found that XM has a weekly cume of 10,332,900, while Sirius has a cume of 6,595,000. The satellite ratings were for persons ages 12+, based on approximately 466,000 in 300 markets during the Spring book (April-June).
Sirius Satellite Radio said Wednesday it re-signed legendary classic rock DJ Bruce Morrow, known on-air as “Cousin Brucie,” to an exclusive multiyear deal. (AP story)
From Forbes.com:
A Pennsylvania teacher resigned after winning a date with a porn tar during a satellite radio contest. The school board voted to accept Jaison Biagini’s resignation on Tuesday. While listening to the “Bubba the Love Sponge” radio show on Sirius satellite radio, Biagini won the trip last month to St. Petersburg, Florida, to meet with porn star Akira. Biagini, who uses a wheelchair, was interviewed on the radio show after returning home, and told a local newspaper that he was ridiculed for his disability and offended by how he was portrayed on the show. He also expressed concerns about his teaching job.
Looks like his concerns were well-founded.
