Radio news not using social media

Although Facebook and Twitter are popular with TV stations, only 27% of radio newsrooms use Twitter and 1% have a Facebook page. The survey’s conductor, Robert Papper of Hofstra University, said the contrast in usage is due to staff size. “If you had a staff of three or more, you were involved in a number of social networking things. If you did not hit that magic number you were not involved.” He explains why radio stations do not participate more in social media:

How is your radio news department using Facebook, Twitter, or text messaging?

We are using these well. Our Facebook fan page is super-active. Last night, we took nearly 350 photos with fans at a concert and posted them this morning. Here’s the link to our FB page, if you’d like to check it out. http://Facebook.com/TheHouseFM. We’re also on Twitter here: http://Twitter.com/TheHouseFM.

We also update our blogs with national, local, & station news. You can see these here: http://www.TheHouseFM.com

1% for Facebook is NOT accurate.

Anonymous: Keep in mind he’s referring to radio NEWS departments. Based on what I hear on the half-dozen news and news/talk stations I listen to Twitter rules with them.

Twitter we use to update on songs that may be coming up, new updates etc… Also while on air as another sources of communication with listeners… Some listeners are more prone to reach out via twitter rather than pick up a phone an call.

Facebook we are actually currently using as a transitory website while our station site undergoes a complete overhaul. Once site is up we’ll continue to use facebook to bring traffic to our website especially for those who wouldn’t normally go to our site but are fans on our Facebook page.
